Plans to build the 24' Surveyor Aluminum Work Boat

Surveyor Aluminum Work Boat

Modern sidescan swath underwater surveying is incredible technology. It demands some different characteristics of a boat, though, to get the most accurate data including, very low hull induced turbulence when underway at slow speeds (meaning extremely low slow speed drag) but also requires the ability to plane. I designed this easy-to-build aluminum hull for a hydrographic surveying company then realized that these requirements, very low drag when traveling slowly (meaning extremely good fuel economy) and the ability to go fast on a plane when needed to get out of the weather, are just what many pleasure boat owners are after these days.

Surveyor Aluminum Work Boat Plans

You can build the Surveyor with the workboat cabin shown, a smaller pilothouse only, a cutty cabin to spend overnight inside, or leave it wide open with a center console for the huge deck preferred by many fishermen. It'll get up on a plane nicely with about 90 horses, and troll all day on not very much gas. It'd the perfect 24 footer for work or fun on the water with today's high gas prices.

Free Study Plans and Bill of Materials for the Surveyor Aluminum Work Boat

Our study plans are two of the actual construction drawings. They're not enough information for you to build the boat, but they do give you the overall boat size, shape and construction methods. This is a pdf file readable with the free Adobe Acrobat pdf file reader.

About Welded Aluminum Boats

Welded aluminum has become the easiest, least expensive and most successful construction methods for boats in the past few decades. Easy to weld alloys that require no coating or paint, even in seawater, new, inexpensive MIG welding equipment that makes doing high quality weld beads a breeze, and some new engineering techniques capable of pre-lofting the lines of the hull combine to make aluminum a fine choice for the amateur boat builder. If you want an ultra-tough, very low maintenance, easy-to-build boat, take a long hard look at aluminum.
